Orrell RUFC Junior Colts V Prenton RUFC Junior Colts
Sunday 22nd February 2009
Orrell had another home game at John Rigby College cancelled so they had to travel to make sure the game was played, this time it was a short trip to Prenton so I would like to thank all the drivers who ship the team to all the far flung corners of the region every week.
With only 14 players available and hoping to build on last week’s impressive win against Trafford Metrovick , Orrell were at a disadvantage straight away playing with a player less and having been on the losing side last time the 2 meet. Prenton won the toss and choose to kick into the wind in the first half and being a strong physical side put Orrell under pressure straight away missing out on the first try of the game by Knocking on at the try line and had another good opportunity from a 5 meter scrum only for it to be disallowed for feeding. The first try came from a mistake by Prenton allowing Rothwell to pick up and pass out to Armstong who showed his usual turn of pace to collect to ball and place under the sticks for an easy conversion for Hughes. Orrell second try came from a scrum in the middle of the field passed out by Rothwell to Houghton who saw Halsall clear on the wing to go into the corner.
Half Time Orrell 12 Prenton 0
The Second half started pretty much as the first ended with Orrell defending well and clearing their lines just to be attacked again but with the wind against Orrell Kicking clear was not an option and playing the ball out to the wings with speed really troubled the Prenton defence Halsall and Armstrong both carrying the ball well up field on many occasions. Orrell finally got on the scoreboard in the second half from a penalty for a high tackle which allowed Hughes to pass to Whitfield and he forced his way through the defence for the try, from then on most of the play was in the Prenton Half with Orrell pushing at every attack. The second try came from a 5 meter scrum with hughes going over to score. The final try came again from Armstrong with a powerful run down the wing there were a few other calls during the second half but the referee spotted infringements in the build up so they were disallowed.
Final Score Orrell 27 Prenton 0
Coaches Man of the Match award went to the whole team as they played as well as in any game this season and did the club proud playing Good entertaining rugby with solid defence.
