Orrell Junior Colts v Traford Metrovick Junior Colts
Sunday 15th February 2009
With Orrell having another game cancelled at John Rigby due to the state of the pitches, we travelled away to Trafford Metrovick and this was not the only thing to conspire against us we had no coach available for the match and only 13 players fit to play and with Trafford Metrovick leading the league just before Christmas the omens looked bad for Orrell.
The match started and it was all a bit scrappy although Orrell were retaining the ball well and most of the action was in the Trafford half. The first try came qite early in the match with Hughes kicking long to give Trafford a lineout 5 metres from their line as the ball went in Grant rose collected the ball and as he came down with it the Trafford defence just separated to allow him through to score. This seemed to spur Trafford into action as they replied almost immediately with a try of their own. With the game played at some pace it was Willthingys who made the next break picking up a lose ball from a penalty to score a try in the corner. Orrell now seemed to be have the better of the ball and 2 more tries plus conversions were added to the score. Just before half time Orrell became very complacent and Trafford hit back with 2 tries and a conversion to give a half time score of Trafford 17 Orrell 31.
The second half started with Trafford carrying on where they left off as the Orrell defence went to sleep and they drew level with 2 tries and 1 conversion so now it was game on with both teams raising their games and their tempers the turning point coming with Trafford having a player sin binned with ten minutes to go and now with 13 players apiece Orrell exerted more pressure on Trafford and with more space available on the field for the wingers to attack Armstong gained 2 more tries one of which was a penalty try and Hughes duly converted.
Final score Trafford 31 Orrell 45
It was a good result for Orrell especially after the previous 2 defeats. There were several contenders for man of the match but the 2 that stood out were Josh Grant in the forwards And Jamie Willthingys in the backs
