Orrell Colts 12 v Kirby Lonsdale 13
Kirby arrived boasting an unbeaten start to the season 3 wins in 3
games and seem to be the team to beat.
They certainly got off to a good start with a try after 5 minutes after
continuos pressure in Orrells 22. five minutes later and they stretched
their lead by 3 points with a neatly taken penalty, Giving away costly
penalties set the theme for the rest of the match. Orrell were
continually penalised for niggling infringements and errors. The first
half was very scrappy with neither side really dominating. Approaching
the break, Orrell seemed to find some of their form with John Hyland
running in a well deserved try.
In the second half Orrell started to take control, more imaginative in
attack and strong in defence. A long kicked clearance from KIrby took a
cruel bounce and put Orrell under pressure, some uncharacteristic weak
tackling and Kirby go over for a second try. Although Orrell had better
possession and looked much more dangerous with the ball in hand, their
scrum and lineouts were unconvincing and ineffective. This was only
Orrells second game of the season against Kirbys fourth and this was a
key factor, although Orrell were individually better, Kirby played
better as a team. In attack Orrell threatened Kirby's line time and
again, and it was only a matter of time before we scored, a terrific
move involving Andy and Jack found Stacey with a yard of space, and
that was all he needed to break the Kirby line with great pace. Mike
Walker converted the kick to bring the game within a single point. But
Kirby had worked too hard to let it slip away and held on for the win.
Vale of Lune 12 Orrell 42*
Orrell played their opening game in the Enterprise Finance Europe competition against the side that knocked them out last year.
Straight from the kick off Orrell tore into the opposition and from a scrum good handling saw Watts go over in the corner after less than two minutes. More good pressure by Orrell resulted in a second try for Watts which Houghton converted. Vale of Lune then exerted pressure on the Orrell line and although Orrell’s defence held firm for a while Vale of Lune eventually went over in the corner. Straight from the kick off Orrell hit back with a try from Pierce which was converted by Halsall. Just before half time a long kick over the defence saw a good chase from Farrimond who outpaced the opposition to score another Orrell try. (24-5).
After the restart a kick was collected by Brindle who ran it 50 yds to score an unconverted try. Vale of Lune again began to put Orrell under pressure but a good break from their own half saw Watts go over for his third try. Another forced error from Vale of Lune saw Pierce collect his second try and although Vale of Lune replied with a converted try Orrell had the last word when on the final whistle Pierce completed his hat trick.
The only downside was a penalty count of 9-0 to the opposition with a number of the penalties conceded for talking back to the referee. This was a good team performance with everybody playing a part in the win and a very good start to the cup competition.
TRIES (8): Watts (3), Pierce (3), Farrimond, Brindle
CONS (2): Houghton, Halsall.

With an under strength squad Orrell were always up against it. The 10 players that did turn up all put a100% into the game.
Rochdale agreed to play 10 v 11 for the first 20 minutes then they would give us some players to play 15 v15. Unfortunate when the first try was scored they had 12 on the field of play. This was soon put down to the agreed 11. Some teams would have given up at half time but not these lads they tried their hardest until the final whistle.
Well done lads and thanks.
