Orrell 5 - 45 Eccles
Once again the score line doesn't tell the whole story of this match, one of the best performances from this unexperienced side so far.
We welcomed a new prop, Adam who put a tough tackling display and also our hooker Rob, who suprised everyone by turning out after his injury during training the previous week. Pre-match there was a real focus about the team, everyones head was in the right place and they were gunning for a win. Thanks to all the lads from both sides as well for a well observed silence on Rememberance Sunday.
And so to the match........Orrell held out for the first 10 minutes before conceding the first try, and should have scored twice in the first half. Some excellent pressure within the Eccles 22 nearly led to the opening try but we were unfortunately turned over.
Orrell got a well deserved try in the opening minutes of the second half with a well time run from Grant beating all in his wake for a stunning solo try. This puts Grant as the top try scorer. Eccles started to run in more tries towards the end of the match but once again Orrell fought to the last.
From the coaching team I want to reiterate my words after the game - The team can hold their heads up high after this match, some real positives were seen and I feel the all important team ethic is starting to grow. Once again the team drew praise from the opposition coaches, a feature of this season already, with all saying how well the lads are playing against teams that have been together years and how we have the makings of a very good side.
Well done to Rob who got Man of the Match - for his commitment to the cause, firstly in turning out after a painful knee injury and secondly displaying his usual tenacity on the pitch. Well done also to Tom for the Top Tackler award - Tom was playing his first match at fullback and put in a confident display, showing good tactical awareness.
