With half the colts playing first team rugby, if they don't batter everybody at their own level I will be most disappointed. Hopefully we will soon be in a position whereby the colts aren't playing 80 minutes for the ones and can just concentrate on their own development coming off the bench for 20 or so minutes. Then the Colts really will be able to cut loose.

MOLD 3 v ORRELL 19
Orrell senior colts picked up from were they left off last season with a convincing win over league newcomers Mold. Mold went for the easy points early on with a penalty conversion from 20 yds out after only 3 minutes. But it only took Orrell two minutes more to take the lead, from the restart Orrell put Mold under immediate pressure and stole the ball, after some very tidy work by the forwards Sean Balcombe powered over from 10 yards. Mike Walker converting the kick. From that point on, although Mold had plenty of possession they never looked strong enough to really test the Orrell defence. Time after time Mold were stopped with crunching tackles all over the field, three Mold players having to leave the field after particularly robust tackles. After 30 minutes Orrell increased their lead after some prolonged forward work created an opportunity for Jack Smith to break the line and sprint over from 30 yards. Orrell could have scored more tries but for a number of loose passes, which could be put down to rustiness from the summer break. But this did not detract from an awesome performance of speed, power and skill. With 3 minutes to go Orrell won a lineout 10 yards out. A beautifully executed set piece saw Captain Andy Croft burst through on the inside, faced with two defenders Andy put his head down and nothing was going to stop him going over for his try, to cap off a tremendous overall performance. Very difficult to single out players for praise this was a real team performance. Good to see Chris Smith back after injury looking very sharp. Awesome tackling from Jack, Christian and Mike Wilson. Ingenuity and industry from the pack. A big thank you to Mold for a very warm welcome.
