Orrell 31 v Ashton on Mersey (South Manchester) 22
Half Time ( 19 - 10)
In fine weather a good crowd at John Rigby College including many former Orrell players witnessed a great start to the new era of rugby union in Orrell.
The young Orrell team inspired by forwards Daley and Pickup held their own against experienced opponents and created space for the backs to spread the ball wide for winger Andrew Statter to open the scoring with a try.
Ashton hit back immediately with a try from a well worked rolling maul which was to be their trademark tactic throughout the match.
Tries from Steve Raffell and captain Neil Liptrot both converted by Liptrot opened up a lead for Orrell, however good performances from the visitors forwards Matt Stanton and Tim Hinsley along with full back Darren Maroney helped Ashton to fight back with two tries either side of Half time.
With the visitors only two points adrift and getting the upper hand in a tight game joint winners of man of the match award for Orrell, David Wane and Mark Hewlett combined for Hewlett to score a try wide out on the wing.
The crowd were jubilant only for Ashton to again respond quickly with a try, but missed the conversion to leave the two point advantage to Orrell.
The stage was set for a grand finale and Orrell did not disappoint creating the best try of the game in a fine flowing period of rugby involving both forwards and backs, which eventually saw Statter score his second try of the game, which Liptrot converted to make the final score 31-22 to Orrell.
Both players and spectators celebrated a great victory with a sense, once more, of a bright future ahead. Next weeks fixture Away to Wallasey.
